Craigslist Personals: When Should You Flag a Personals Ad?

If you have used Craigslist personals ad for any period of time, you'd know that it's full of scammer bots. But did you know that you can flag these ads when you come across them? To flag it, just click on the "prohibited" link or the box next to it (see screen shot below). After a few people has flagged an ad, Craigslist will remove the ad completely.

Now why would you want to flag an ad? Basically, why is it worth your time? Well, if you enjoy using Craigslist's personal listings, then you want to work with everyone else to keep the scammers out. By flagging, you reduce the benefits that the scammers gains by posting these scam ads. And if they receive zero revenue from doing this work, then they'll stop (slim chance). If everyone does their job flagging the ads, it becomes much easier to sort out the real people vs. fake scams.

But it's not easy to determine if an ad is a scam, right? True, it is a lot harder to determine a scam ad from a legitimate one right off the bat. But I have developed a fool-proof process over the last few weeks that I will now share with you.

Step 1: If you are inclined to reply to an ad, be sure to ask for a reply back that shows you it is a real person replying. For example, I ask for favorite colors and the city they reside. It should be something a real person can answer easily, but does not reveal their identity.

Step 2: If you get a response back, and the response ask you to e-mail them or text them or give you a web site link without proving it is human, then flag it!

In my experience, I have never had a real person give me an e-mail, phone number, or a web site link right off the bat without getting to know you. So flag the ad ASAP and delete the e-mail the bot sent you. If it is a real person (one in a million), they will learn quickly; they can read my "How to Avoid Getting Flagged?".

In the future, I will show some example ads, where you can flag immediately, because you know they are scam, without even waste your time responding.

Should You Flag a Prostitution Ad?

First of all, where prostitution is legal, the ads should be left alone. In fact, I would hope Craigslist set-up a prostitution section just for that profession.

In areas where prostitution is illegal, let's talk about whether the ads should be allowed. Prostitution is illegal in most states. So it's reasonable to flag a prostitution ad. However, it is never that simple in reality.

The fact is, if we were to flag all of the prostitution ads, the prostitutes will simply attempt to masquerade they ads as normal people. When you respond to their ad, then they will let you know. In this case, it becomes even harder to sort through casual encounter ads.

I never flag prostitution ads, because at this time, it's easy to tell whether an ad is a prostitution ad (see this thread for all the indicators). So I can simply ignore and skip them. The better way to get rid of these prostitution ads is to never answer any of them. First of all, they are illegal. Second of all, they could be police operatives. If no one answers prostitution ads where they are illegal, prostitution ads will go away all on their own.

Unfortunately, we live in a society where people do like to walk on the risky side of the fence. So prostitution ads are going to continue. But as long as they identify themselves, they are easy to sort through.
